Pinellas County Homes For Sale
Pinellas County is home to a number of Gulfside communities, including the county seat of Clearwater and the large city of St. Petersburg. It is part of the Tampa Metropolitan area, often called the Tampa Bay Area.
Named for the Spanish Punta Piñal (Point of Pines), Pinellas County was originally part of neighboring Hillsborough County, until it seceded from Hillsborough in 1912. The Pinellas Peninsula divides Tampa Bay from the Gulf of Mexico.
The Peninsula is bounded on the north by Pasco County, northeast by Hillsborough County, and on the east and south by Tampa Bay. The western boundary is the beautiful Intra-Coastal Waterway and the Gulf of Mexico. A series of bridges connect the county to its neighboring communities.
The Peninsula was once home to much of Florida’s wildlife, including the Black Bear, the Florida panther and hundreds of species of native birds. Today, the Pinellas National Wildlife refuge is part of the National Wildlife Refuge System. Accessible only by boat, the refuge was established in 1951 as a protected breeding ground for colonial bird species.
Even with its nod to nature, Pinellas County is a bustling metroplex. With Tampa, St. Petersburg and Clearwater all a part of Pinellas, the county is one of the most densely populated in Florida. More people live in Pinellas County that the entire states of Wyoming and Montana.
The blend of natural beauty, beaches and big city living contribute to a casual urban lifestyle unique to the Florida coast. Great weather and popular tourist attractions bring in visitors and permanent residents alike to shop, dine, and enjoy seaside activities.
With average of nearly 360 days of sunshine each year, St. Petersburg itself has the nickname "The Sunshine City." While the area has been known for some time as a popular retirement region, especially from residents of northern, colder climates (the ‘Snowbirds’), the last ten years or so has seen a resurgence in young people and growing families making their homes in Pinellas County. Pinellas Country truly has something to offer everyone.
